The Visual & Performing Arts Division of Gulf Coast State College presents She is of the South, a group exhibition featuring work by Carrie Ann Baade, Inga Kimberly Brown, Katelyn Chapman, Hannah Hill, Norah Lovell, Holly Ann Scoggins, and Lauren Woods. The show features work by women who were raised or live in the South and whose work reflects a sense of Southern identity. What is Southern identity? There are many answers to that question, and each artist provides her own unique interpretation, but there are a few constants. One such constant is family, or more precisely a multi-generational understanding of family, with a complicated history, deeply rooted in the land. Another, is tradition, a certain way of doing things as they have always been done. Tradition which could be empowering or ensnaring. Finally, there is spirituality, weather dogmatic or mystical, or something in between; a sense of other worldly, of something just beyond the reach, is ever-present. All of the invited artist share a narrative, often autobiographical, approach to painting. These narratives speak of family, spirituality, tradition; and while the stories are different they all share a sense of mystery and bitter-sweet nostalgia that is particularly Southern. The exhibit will run from February 16 to March 16, with an opening reception on the evening of February 16, 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The work will be on display in the Amelia Center Gallery (Room 112). Gallery hours are Monday – Thursday, 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., and Friday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Admission is free. The Charitable Sisterhood of the Second Trinity Victory Church By BO WILSON Produced by special arrangement with DRAMATIC PUBLISHING, INC.
The roads are flooded, the bridges are washed out, and less generous souls are staying safely indoors, but it takes more than a little rain to keep the ladies of the Charitable Sisterhood from fulfilling their sworn mission. Bea Littleton is the pastor's wife; Lorraine Jensen is the tireless mother of nine; Tina Yates is the transplanted Yankee; and Janet Murchison is the newest arrival. When these ladies meet to organize a relief effort for homeless Guatemalans, they are greeted with a small mountain of community donations—but one woman's junk is another woman's treasure. [less-]
