[more+]

The Visual & Performing Arts Division of Gulf Coast State College presents After Action Review, a group exhibition featuring work by Jesse Albrecht, Michael Aschenbrenner, Thaddeus Erdahl, Aaron Hughes, Tyler Nicholson, Thomas Orr,  Jessica Putnam Phillips, Jennifer Robinson, and Ehren Tool.

As stated in the Army Training Circular 25-20 “After-action reviews (AARs) help provide soldiers and units feedback on mission and task performances in training and in combat. After-action reviews identify how to correct deficiencies, sustain strengths, and focus on performance of specific mission essential task list (METL) training objectives.”

The artists represented in this AAR are veterans and former active duty members from Viet Nam, Desert Storm, and the so-called Global War on Terror. While not considering themselves spokespeople or representatives of these conflicts, they serve as the juncture between the civilian world and the experiences of servicemembers in and out of wartime.

Every participant in this collection was chosen not only because of their experiences in the military or combat but due to their unique take on art-making—each bringing their voice and perspective of the world in which they navigate and sustain their strengths.

The exhibit will run from October 15 to November 9, with a closing reception on the evening of November 9, 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Tyler Nicholson, who curated the exhibit, will present a lecture about the work in the show on November 9, 1:00p.m. – 2:00p.m. in the Amelia Center, room AC128. The work will be on display in the Amelia Center Gallery (Room 112). Gallery hours are Monday – Thursday, 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., and Friday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Admission is free. HEADS UP! Portraits on View
October 6 – November 10, 2018

Stephen Bennett Smith has a Fine Arts degree from the University of Florida and has been a graphic designer for over 44 years. "Through being a designer, I realize that sometimes simplicity is the best solution, I’m really trying to communicate visually and verbally by manipulating typography, but relating a message is also very important. With painting it may just be how I feel about the moment or the scene that I’m viewing." Presently he is the Exhibit Designer at the Museum of Florida History in Tallahassee, Florida.

Maxine Thomas Through Threads of Time
October 12 – November 17, 2018

Art quilts are a trip through space, time, illusion, emotions, texture, and color for Maxine Thomas. Ever practical, quilted place mats, throws, bedcovers, and wall hangings appeal to notion of what is right and useful as an lawyer and as an artist's love of freedom and whimsy. With the accuracy of patchwork, the discipline of applique, sewing, and cutting and the creativity of quilting, art quilts nurture my soul. Maxine uses fabrics from around the world to evoke emotion from my life and in the lives of her audience.

Sixty-two years before William Bartram stood at the edge of the Great Alachua Savanna and looked out on his level green plain, Mark Catesby embarked on his own journey of discovery. The result of his efforts was 263 watercolors and drawings which, along with field notes and hundreds of preserved specimens, constituted one of the earliest and certainly one of the most comprehensive systematic studies of the flora and fauna of southeastern North America. In this lecture, the objective is to draw parallels between William Bartram and his predecessor, Mark Catesby, and to establish an historical and cultural context for understanding and appreciating their work.

Part of a seven (7) event series.

Support for the Speaker Series is provided by a grant from the Florida Humanities Council with funds from the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs.

October 27 - November 30, 2018

From mild to wild, Christon Anderson has clearly developed a recognizable style. Self-proclaimed as sophisticated gutter, awarded and scooped up by emerging collectors and the seasoned art community. He uses a variety of traditional mediums that stand-alone and meld creating visionary, intuitive, abstract, dimensional works of art. Christon evokes memories and fiery emotions, via his antagonism and social criticism.
