Panama City POPS Orchestra Announces 2016/17 Season
-New Conductor David Ott ushers in a musical exploration from Beethoven to the Beetles-
Panama City, Fla., August 24, 2016 – Panama City Pops Orchestra welcomes a new conductor, who will lead the resident
orchestra in an exciting season of diverse musical offerings. David Ott, an accomplished classical music composer, will
assume the baton in a season that mixes the seriousness of Beethoven with lighthearted instrumental scores from both pop
and Broadway classics.
The 2016/17 program, with an overarching theme of “Getting to Know You” as it welcomes Maestro Ott, consists of the
following performances:
“Ports O’ Call,” Friday, October 15, 7:30 p.m.
The orchestra transports listeners on a musical journey with scores from three ports of call: Scandinavia, Russia and the U.S.
“Love & Marriage,” Saturday, January 14, 7:30 p.m.
Sweethearts can get a one-month jump on Valentine’s Day with a night of romantic scores from Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and
Juliet, Márquez’s Danzon No. 2 and other works exploring the theme of love and marriage.
“Only in America,” Saturday, March 11, 7:30 p.m.
Guest pianist Frederick Moyer leads a program exploring the U.S.’ revolutionizing influence on classical music, beginning
with Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and culminating in Grofe’s Grand Canyon Suite.
“Beethoven, Beetles & Blue Jeans,” Saturday, April 29, 7:30 p.m.
The orchestra takes a whimsical exploration of three pioneers who transformed their fields: Beethoven (classical music),
The Beetles (rock music) and Levi Strauss (apparel). For this night only, patrons are encouraged to let their hair down and
wear their blue jeans.
