Celebrating Women’s Contributions in Panama City, Florida: Lillian West and Belle Booth

Panama City, FL – January 9, 2025 –  As part of Florida’s celebration of Women’s Day, we proudly spotlight two trailblazing women who helped shape the history of Panama City. Lillian West, a pioneering newspaper publisher, and Belle Booth, the first female postmaster of Panama City, exemplify courage, leadership, and community dedication.

Lillian West: A Pioneering Voice in Journalism
Lillian Carlisle West was a groundbreaking newspaper publisher in the early 20th century. As a rare female leader in an industry dominated by men, she became the owner and publisher of the Panama City Pilot after the death of her husband, George West, Panama City’s founding father. Together, the Wests were known for their progressive views, championing women’s suffrage and social justice causes.

Lillian West continued her work as a publisher and editor, shaping Panama City’s media landscape well into the 1930s. Under her leadership, the West’s newspapers were critical of corruption and supported progressive movements such as prohibition and the regulation of industries. Notably, she was the first woman to register to vote in St. Andrews following the passage of the 19th Amendment.

Today, the Panama City Publishing Company Museum, located in the historic St. Andrews district, celebrates the legacy of George and Lillian West. The museum offers hands-on exhibits exploring vintage printing techniques, as well as displays honoring the Wests’ contributions to local journalism and the broader cultural fabric of the community.

Belle Booth: Panama City’s First Female Postmaster
Belle Booth’s contributions to Panama City were equally profound. Appointed in 1908 as Panama City’s first female postmaster, she broke new ground in both public service and community leadership. After the passing of her husband, Dr. Charles Booth, Belle designed and built the McKenzie House, which stands as a testament to her resilience and creativity.

In 1912, she married Robert Lee McKenzie, Panama City’s first mayor. Despite facing personal loss, including the death of her only child, Jewel, Belle Booth remained deeply involved in the community, offering guidance and support to women and girls through social and benevolent organizations. In recognition of her remarkable legacy, the city recently renamed East 3rd Court to Belle Booth Place, honoring her lasting impact on Panama City’s history.

Belle Booth’s home, now known as the McKenzie House, was placed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1986, ensuring her legacy endures for generations to come. A local blonde ale at History Class Brewery is even named in her honor, continuing to celebrate her enduring influence on the community.

Honoring Women’s Contributions to Panama City’s Legacy
These inspiring women represent the spirit of resilience and progress that defines Panama City’s rich history. From journalism to public service, Lillian West and Belle Booth set a powerful example for women in Florida and beyond. Their contributions remind us of the important roles women have played in shaping our communities and continue to inspire future generations.
