Destinations on a Budget: Panama City, FL
Traveling to the Florida Coast Doesn’t Have to Cost Much
Panama City, FL – April 01, 2018 – Destination Panama City invites travelers to experience Panama City, FL with quirky historic neighborhoods, restaurants along the Oyster Trail, sailing in St. Andrews Bay and art galleries throughout downtown. This sunny destination offers a unique travel spot on a budget with many things to do for free or under $20.
With roots as a salty fishermen’s village, St. Andrews neighborhood is the most walkable part of the city. Visitors can take in the quirky neighborhood with a free walking tour starting at the Panama City Publishing Museum on Wednesdays and Fridays at 1:30 p.m. If visitors are busy enjoying other parts of the city at that time, the museum also offers a downloadable audio tour so they can walk the neighborhood at their leisure. In addition to a guided tour, visitors can take a stroll along the boardwalk at Oaks by the Bay, one of seven waterfront parks in the city.
St. Andrews also offers visitors the opportunity to participate in “Art on the Spot” at Floriopolis. Anyone can visit the gallery and flex artistic muscles by creating a free 10-minute art project. After visiting the local galleries, visitors can continue their tour of the city by boat. The Governor Stone, a 140-year-old National Historic Landmark, offers free sailing around the bay aboard the schooner on the second Saturday of each month (weather permitting). Sailors can find the Governor’s Stone by Uncle Ernie’s Bayfront Grill in Historic St. Andrews.
While there is plenty to do for free throughout the city, no day is complete without delicious food, and Panama City offers plenty of unique flavors and recipes to keep the adventure going. Just the Cook provides the food truck experience but on a boat. Docked at the St. Andrews Marina, Just the Cook has been featured on the Cooking Channel for its creative Dan-D-Burger ($12). Other dining options in the city abound with the Panama City Oyster Trail. Connecting oyster purveyors with oyster coinsurers, the trail has over 12 restaurants where patrons can order their oysters raw, baked, char-grilled or fried – Panama City serves up the tasty local bivalves in almost every method imaginable. With an oyster po’ boy from Millie’s Cafe ($8.25) or on the half shell ($9.95), those looking for fresh oysters in the city can’t go wrong.
