Panama City, FL Expands Eco-Adventure Opportunities with Addition of Sandy Creek State Forest

Panama City, FL: August 1, 2025 — Outdoor exploration and conservation in Northwest Florida are getting a major boost with the creation of Sandy Creek State Forest, Florida’s newest state forest. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) finalized the acquisition of 12,243 acres in Bay County, expanding the Florida Wildlife Corridor and adding a significant new destination for recreation and ecological preservation.

This acquisition, part of the Bear Creek Forest Florida Forever Project, protects a key section of the St. Andrew Bay Watershed. It will help safeguard water quality, reduce flooding in surrounding communities, and preserve critical habitats, including longleaf pine forests, wetlands, and floodplains. The land supports wildlife such as the gopher tortoise, Florida black bear, and potentially threatened species like the reticulated flatwoods salamander.

“With the creation of Sandy Creek State Forest, we’re not only preserving vital ecosystems and expanding wildlife habitat but also connecting conservation lands from Eglin Air Force Base to Apalachicola National Forest,” said DEP Secretary Alexis A. Lambert. “This new state forest will offer meaningful public access while protecting the natural resources that make our state so special.”

A New Chapter for Eco-Adventures in Panama City

This milestone reflects Panama City’s growing reputation as a hub for eco-adventures. “The addition of Sandy Creek State Forest enhances our already robust catalogue of outdoor and nature-based experiences,” said Jennifer Vigil, President and CEO of Destination Panama City. “From paddling in St. Andrews Bay and exploring the counties rare coastal dune lakes to hands-on marine life tours, this new forest underscores our commitment to connecting visitors with Northwest Florida’s incredible natural assets.”

Once opened, Sandy Creek State Forest will provide opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and outdoor education. Managed by the Florida Forest Service, the property will serve both conservation and recreation purposes while bolstering the Northwest Florida Sentinel Landscape and the Florida Wildlife Corridor.

Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson added, “When opened, Sandy Creek State Forest will provide new outdoor recreation opportunities for families, sportsmen, and nature lovers in Northwest Florida. We’re expanding access to the outdoors while protecting our natural spaces for future generations to enjoy.”

This new addition complements Panama City’s eco-focused offerings, from dolphin tours and snorkeling excursions in St. Andrews Bay to guided paddle trips, birdwatching along the Great Florida Birding Trail, and immersive programs with marine educators like Emerald & Forgotten Coast Adventures. Together, these experiences highlight the destination’s growing emphasis on conservation-driven tourism.
