Welcome to Drews Hall: A Legacy Restored

A Place of History, A Future of Creativity
For nearly a century, the halls of the historic St. Andrews School echoed with the voices of students, educators, and community members. Originally built in 1926, this Mediterranean Revival-style landmark has been a cornerstone of learning, resilience, and togetherness for generations. Now, as it enters its next chapter as Drews Hall, it is poised to become a thriving cultural hub, blending history with creativity to serve the community once more.
A Legacy Built to Last
The story of Drews Hall is one of perseverance. The first school in St. Andrews was built in 1850, only to be lost to fire. A second school followed, but in 1925, it too was destroyed by flames. The present building was constructed in 1926, showcasing stunning architectural details—arched windows, a red tile roof, and a grand auditorium.
During World War II, the school adapted to rapid population growth, hosting double sessions to accommodate the influx of families drawn to the shipyards and Tyndall Air Force Base. Beyond education, the building has been a gathering place for community events, performances, and public service forums. Recognized for its historical significance, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1997. For 92 years, it welcomed thousands of students—until Hurricane Michael in 2018 left it in a state of severe disrepair.
A New Beginning for the Historic School
Today, Drews Hall is undergoing a remarkable transformation, carefully balancing preservation with reinvention. The restoration follows historic preservation guidelines to maintain its architectural integrity. The red tile roof—a defining feature—is being restored using durable, historically accurate materials, marking the first visible sign of its revival. This is more than just a building repair; it is a symbol of resilience, honoring the past while embracing the future.
The name Drews Hall pays homage to the deep roots of the St. Andrews neighborhood while embracing the building’s future as a center for arts and culture. Inspired by the area’s rich history and the many generations who have passed through its doors, the name reflects both a nod to the past and a vision for the future. This revitalized space will continue to be a place where people gather, learn, and create, carrying forward the spirit of community and resilience that has always defined it.
The Vision: A Cultural Heart for St. Andrews
Drews Hall will serve as a creative and cultural arts space, ensuring that the building remains a vibrant part of the community for generations to come. With a 240-seat auditorium, the space will host concerts, theater performances, comedy shows, and community events. Classroom and studio spaces will provide opportunities for visiting and resident artists, workshops, and trade skill education. A scenic courtyard will serve as a picturesque venue for weddings and special events. Additionally, dedicated spots for food trucks and the potential transformation of the old cafeteria into a gastro pub or eatery will offer unique dining experiences for both locals and visitors.
